This is my first published VR Experience. I couldn't find any fully animated virtual live band among the demos published for this VR generation and thought it necessary that such a thing existed.
The Oculus Spatializer was used for the sound sources, so that the instruments emit the sound from their proper positions. Ruins of Krüger is a Berlin underground band. The appropriate art style should look "quirky" and have a minimal surreal pop atmosphere. Starting from that some typical current limitations for VR were easy to avoid: I used almost exclusively Vertex Colors, saving memory and keeping the file size small (less than 50 MB). Because there is no apparent texture blur, the avatars seem to possess more physical integrity. Another benefit was that it took much less effort to read expressive movements - an important theme in the Experience. . In combination with the low-poly style a very fluid and comfortable experience could be achieved, which nevertheless doesn't have to compromise on the presence. In order to ground the virtual scene a bit more in reality two of the instruments were modeled after classic modern instruments: a Fender Musicmaster bass and a Sonor Teardrop drum kit have been translated into the art style of the Experience. The actual movements of playing I also tried to convey in a realistic manner. |
